While tidal flats, or mud flats, lack vegetation and are home mostly to invertebrates that live under the surface, they provide very valuable habitat for creatures living in the mud, including microorganisms, worms, crabs, sand fleas, and many others. These species provide food for coastal birds, fish, and mammals. Commercially important species like clams and shrimp can be found near tidal flats, particularly along the Gulf Coast. Birds that feed and loaf here include Roseate Spoonbills and Reddish Egrets.
