White Tailed Kite

Kites are named for their swooping flight, like a toy kite, and the White-tailed Kite certainly lives up to its name. Its legs dangle while it hovers, waiting to dive onto its prey of small rodents and reptiles. It is sociable during the breeding season, and gathers in communal roosts. Its beautiful markings and graceful flight make it a standout, but it is rare across its range which includes parts of Texas, Mexico, and the Pacific coast of the US. Florida is the only place east of the Mississippi River to see the White-tailed Kite.
