Bachman’s Sparrow

“My memory goes back to a warm spring morning in the pine woods, the fragrance of the pine and a faint tang of wood smoke in the air: it is in such a setting that the mellow notes of Bachman’s sparrow leave an unforgettable impression on the hearer” (Francis Marion Weston). Bachman’s Sparrow is secretive in its pine forest habitat, preferring to stay down in the wiregrass. It’s much easier to find by its beautiful song. This species seems to have benefited from pine tree farming. The clearing of first growth and planting of pines allowed the c grasses to grow that the bird favors for breeding. It certainly benefits now from prescribed burning which keeps the undergrowth grassy.
