DESCRIPTION:Learning Gate’s Christmas Bird Count for Kids \nSaturday\, January 4th\, 2020 \nThe “Christmas Bird Count for Kids” is a shortened version of the official Christmas Bird Count (CBC) that take’s place throughout the United States and Canada during December and January. The bird count provides a kid-friendly alternative to the Audubon Christmas Bird Count\, a century-old citizen science program that collects information about birds. This free program is a great introduction to birding for children ages 8-14 and brings families and the community together to enjoy nature during the holiday season. \nWhat to Expect:\nTo start the program in Heron Hall\, kids first participate in “Binocular Boot Camp” to learn basic bird identification and binocular skills before splitting up into small teams(each with an expert birder) for a 3/4 mile hike through different habitats. We will be visiting the garden\, forest and lake searching for as many different species as we can find. \nAfter the hike\, participants will return to Heron Hall to share their findings with the whole group. The program is focused on children in grades 3rd – 8th. **Parents will be responsible for their children during the event.** Parents will be responsible for supervising any additional siblings that will be in attendance. \nPlease use the sign-up below to register each child in grades 3 – 8. Registration is limited to 30 students. Bring a water bottle\, snacks & comfortable\, closed-toe shoes. DESCRIPTION:Audubon Christmas Bird Count at Corkscrew \nDate: Saturday\, December 14\, 2019 \nTime: 6:30am – 6:30pm \nDescription:\nThis year marks the 120th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, the longest-running community science project in the world.  The Corkscrew Count Circle area is one of over 2000 Count Circles from many countries in the western hemisphere that participate each year.   \nThis year’s Corkscrew CBC will be held on Saturday\, December 14\, 2019. \nThe Corkscrew CBC Count Circle is divided up into eleven team areas.  There is a team captain in charge of each team who decides the plan and the start time for the team. Most teams meet to start in the parking lot of the Blair Audubon Center.  All teams come back to the classroom of the Blair Center at the end of the day to drop off their data forms or to stay for the Round up Dinner\, when we begin compiling all of the data from each team.  \nParticipants do not have to be expert birders to participate\, there is usually a mix of experience levels on each team.  The CBC is a great way for beginning birders to become more knowledgeable about the birds and their habitats.  \nThis circle is open to accepting participants from the general public\, interested participants should contact Sally Stein\, Corkscrew CBC Compiler\, at sstein@audubon.org for more information and to register.

DESCRIPTION:Join Marion Audubon Society and Sandhill chapter FTA for birding by kayak on the Silver River. \nMeet at Silver Springs State Park (Main Entrance) Kayak Launch at 9:00 a.m. You may rent your kayak at the kayak concession table and pay your launch fee as soon as you arrive. If you have your own kayak\, launch fee is $6 (includes admittance to state attraction after kayaking) and you must bring life vest with a whistle. You may drive on the circular drive right in front of the kayak launch\, drop off your kayak and then park your car in the parking lot. All kayakers are required to bring water\, tow rope attached to the front of your kayak\, sun hat\, lunch and a snack. Total time is four hours on the river. We will stop for a break at the ramp\, which has bathrooms and picnic tables\, two miles downstream. Total distance is four miles. \nWe need a volunteer to enter our birding results on the ebird app (https://ebird.org/).
