This trail hotspot is one of the best birding and wildlife viewing locations in Florida. Constructed to filter agricultural runoff from water destined for the Everglades, this complex of four water impoundment cells is an impressive refuge for birds and a mecca for birders and photographers all year long. The access point on Deer Fence Canal Rd. (currently closed, please use access off of Blumberg Rd.), has a parking area, kiosk and vault toilet. Hendry-Glades Audubon Society offer tours at various times throughout the year. Hiking and biking is permitted four days per week. Note that there is little shade at this site and each of the four water cells is approximately 2 miles long by 1 mile wide, so come prepared and plan your time and route accordingly. A 240-foot boardwalk and observation deck are located on the south side of the STA’s northeastern cell; from the picnic shelter go due east on the central levee road for over a mile. Make sure you bring a camera and a spotting scope is recommended. Both species of whistling-duck can be found as well as large flocks of wading birds including Wood Stork and Roseate Spoonbill. Flocks of Bobolink can be found during spring and fall migration, and small flocks of Western Kingbird and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher roost near the western end of Deer Fence Canal Rd. in winter. Crested Caracara can be found plus three species of kite; White-tailed and Snail year-round and Swallow-tailed in the summer. Rarities recorded at the site include Eurasian Wigeon, Cinnamon Teal, American Flamingo, Cassin’s Kingbird and Tropical Kingbird.
