Indrio Savannahs Preserve

This site sits atop a platted subdivision that was never built. Natural community types protected here include extensive freshwater wetlands (basin and depression marshes), pine flatwoods, scrubby flatwoods, scrub and a 35-acre “borrow pit” lake. Three miles of multi-use trails, an ADA-accessible observation deck and fishing pier, plus an observation tower and a canoe launch are available to serve your birding needs. Upon parking, scan the lake margins for Wilson’s Snipes, Wood Storks, Mottled Ducks, and Ospreys overhead. From there, walk from the south end of the lake across the footbridge onto the dike trail. This trail leads through the wetlands where alligators, otters and winter ducks can be found, along with Glossy Ibis, Green Herons, Sandhill Cranes and Roseate Spoonbills. Uplands on the west side of the lake provide shelter for a family of Florida Scrub-Jays, Gopher Tortoises and occasional songbirds during spring and fall migration. Swallow-tailed Kites soar above in spring and summer and Painted Buntings have been recorded.
