Bear Point Sanctuary

Managed by the St. Lucie County Mosquito Control District, this wetlands park/mitigation bank on South Hutchinson Island features a series of mangrove-lined impoundments along the Indian River Lagoon. Hike or bike the unpaved dike trail west to an observation platform on the impoundments and two great viewing spots along Bear Point Cove: an elevated viewing tower and a 500-foot fishing pier. Wwading birds like Wood Stork, Great Egret and Roseate Spoonbill are common in the canals and lagoon, and Reddish Egret and Green Heron occur here as well. Both species of Night Herons skulk in the mangroves. This spot can be good for wood-warblers during spring migration, as they return and make landfall on the coast. Launch a canoe or kayak to paddle the lagoon, where you might encounter manatees and sea turtles. Guided walks, boat tours and interpretive programs are offered; call for details.
