The Nature Center provides educational programs open to everyone, regardless of whether or not they are staying at the Plantation. Call ahead for a information. The Center offers everything from introductory birding classes onsite, to thrilling offsite nature adventures that are appropriate for all ages. The best wildlife viewing spots on the property are Drummond Point Park, the lagoon by Sea Marsh Rd., Oak Marsh #8 fairway, Walker’s Landing, the marshes and, of course, the beach. Birders may use the golf cart paths (please yield to golfers). The plantation has a Black- and Yellow-crowned Night-Heron rookery, plus access to salt marsh and mudflats frequented by shorebirds. Watch for breeding Painted Buntings and migratory songbirds in the maritime hammocks, and scan offshore for flocks of wintering Forster’s Terns and Bonaparte’s Gulls as well as Northern Gannets, Common Loons and the occasional Red-throated Loon. Other wildlife you may encounter at the plantation includes Gopher Tortoise, Loggerhead and Green Sea Turtle, West Indian Manatee and North Atlantic Right Whale.
