Rainbow River / Rainbow Springs Aquatic Preserve

A leisurely float down the crystal clear Rainbow River is an experience you won’t soon forget. In addition to being a state aquatic preserve, the entire river is a designated National Natural Landmark and an Outstanding Florida Waterway. As you drift past cypress, pine and oak woodlands you may spy Limpkin, Red-shouldered Hawk, Swallow-tailed Kite (spring/summer), Bald Eagle, Tricolored Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Wood Duck and Northern River Otter, just to name a few. Listen for Great Crested Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo and Pileated Woodpecker calling from the tree-lined banks. The Rainbow River can be accessed from multiple launch points, including Rainbow Springs State Park and K. P. Hole County Park. The take out location is the City of Dunnellon public boat ramp at the southern end of the river. Several local vendors and outfitters offer tours and boat rentals. This popular spot can be extremely busy with swimmers, tubers and boaters on weekends and during summer; plan your visits accordingly.
